The breed in USA

Mrs Van Anda

Imports into the USA began around 1900 and since then have continued uninterrupted. In 1948 E.J. Weist imported three English dogs Lalarookh Tit Willow, Lalarookh Susanne and, Lalarookh Snookie.
In Canada the Brabançon seems to have had preference over the rough haired variety. Constant van Camp showed four of these dogs in a Canadian show in 1913. He also imported a number of Griffons.
From the earliest days writers have noted with surprise the intelligence and ability to learn of the Griffon. Although they have not been seen so often in American obedience classes, in Europe their precision has permitted them to compete with breeds such as the German Shepherd with exceptional scores.
The American Club appears to be inactive now, but its rule for this breed is still the accepted one.
However there is an Interstate Griffon Club ( Daisy Miller of NY is the current secretary) that is still active.
Among the noteworthy breeders with their best known champions are: Rosalyn Layte, Burlingame. N.J., breeeder and owner of many champions including Ch Gouard's Chiff Chaff of Burlingame y Ch Austral Lil Black Sambo of Burlingam, C. and Iris de la Torre Bueno. N.Y., owners of such notable champions as Ch All Celia's The Magnificent, Ch Celia's Dahlia y and many others. Edmund J. Garry N.J., owner of Ch Shandor's Asha y Ch Shandor's Chandrika and Eleanor F. Baker. Devon, owner of Ch Burlingame Thumbs Up, Ch Surprise of Cranbrook and Cranbrook Tresjoli.
Some 150 Griffons are registered every year, but the Brabançon appears to have found few adepts in this country and are rarely seen.
